DevOps and SRE titles can overlap, and employers organise the work differently. Use the vacancy and interview to understand the responsibility rather than assuming one label guarantees a particular working pattern or seniority.
Google’s SRE resources are a useful primary reference for its approach to reliability. They do not define every employer’s role or provide a universal hiring standard.
1. Which services does the team own?
Ask what the team operates, changes and supports. Clarify the boundary with application, infrastructure and security teams. A broad title can hide a very specific service responsibility.
2. How is reliability discussed?
Ask which service expectations matter and how the team reviews them. Look for an explanation connected to users and operational decisions rather than an unexplained promise of perfect uptime.
3. What work is automated?
Explore repeated tasks, review and failure handling. A useful portfolio example explains why automation was appropriate and how it was checked, not merely that a script exists.
4. What does on-call mean here?
Clarify scheduling, escalation, support and how incidents are reviewed. Do not assume every role has the same out-of-hours expectations or that a vague “ownership” statement answers the practical question.
5. How are changes made safely?
Ask about testing, approval, deployment and recovery in the actual environment. You do not need confidential architecture details to understand the process and the level of responsibility expected.
6. What experience and learning support apply?
Identify the systems knowledge and independence required. A short course can support learning without proving readiness to operate a critical service alone.
Choose the next practical step
Compare the answers with your own evidence and working needs. Use cloud-career questions for adjacent roles, and keep lab work authorised and appropriately scoped. A good decision comes from understanding the work and support, not choosing the title that sounds more advanced.
