Singapore’s minimum retirement age became 64 on 1 July 2026. MOM’s current guidance says the change applies to Singapore citizens and permanent residents. It is important to read the applicable rules and birth-date provisions rather than assume everyone approaching retirement has an identical timeline.

The retirement age and re-employment age describe different parts of the framework. They are not interchangeable with the age at which a person chooses to stop working or starts receiving retirement income.

Start with your own employment timeline

Record your date of birth, employment start date, current responsibilities and any discussion already held with your employer. Check the official retirement and re-employment guidance against those facts. Do not rely on a colleague’s experience under an earlier age threshold.

Ask HR which provisions apply and what the next discussion should cover. If different documents appear inconsistent, request clarification before making a decision about leaving work, accepting new terms or setting a final date.

Separate continuation of work from retirement planning

A conversation about employment can cover responsibilities, working pattern, training and the support needed to perform the role. It does not require you to make every financial or personal decision at the same time.

Prepare examples of the work you currently handle and the knowledge you can pass on. If you want to explore a different workload, describe the arrangement and how it could work operationally. Avoid assuming that a preferred arrangement has been agreed simply because it was mentioned informally.

Questions for the conversation

  • Which retirement-age provision applies to my situation?
  • What re-employment eligibility and process should we review?
  • What work, hours and support are being discussed?
  • When will the next decision or written proposal be available?

Keep a factual note of the discussion and any promised next steps. If a term is unclear or the situation becomes a dispute, use the relevant official assistance route rather than relying on a general online article.

What about the new 2029 announcement?

The 26 October senior-employment announcement concerns a future increase. It does not make 65 the current retirement age in October 2026. Distinguish the rule in force today from a future implementation plan when reviewing your employment documents.
