Singapore's Tripartite Guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangement Requests took effect on 1 December 2024 and cover formal requests. MOM says employers have two months to respond. A formal request process is not an automatic guarantee that any preferred arrangement will be approved.
If an employer has a stated request process, follow it. Otherwise, MOM describes written information including the request date, arrangement, frequency, duration, reason and relevant start and end dates.
Make the arrangement concrete
Explain what would change: working hours, location, workload or another specific feature. Describe the proposed pattern and the period you want considered. “I need flexibility” is a starting point for discussion, but it leaves the operational arrangement unclear.
Keep private details proportionate to the process. You can explain the reason for a request without circulating unnecessary personal information to colleagues who only need to understand the working arrangement.
Address the practical work
Consider customer coverage, meetings, handovers, equipment and how progress would be communicated. Identify points requiring discussion rather than promising that there will be no effect on any colleague.
For example, a proposal could specify collaboration hours and a method for urgent handovers. Whether that arrangement is suitable depends on the role and business circumstances; a template cannot determine the answer.
A request structure to adapt
“I would like to make a formal request for [specific arrangement] from [date] to [date or proposed review point], with [frequency]. The reason is [appropriate explanation]. I propose handling the role's responsibilities through [practical plan]. Please let me know the assessment process and any information needed.”
Use your employer's required format where one exists. Keep the submitted version and ask for clarification if the response or next step is unclear.
Discuss alternatives and review points
A conversation may identify a different pattern that addresses some needs while fitting the work more effectively. Do not treat a proposed trial as a guarantee of a permanent arrangement. Record any agreed terms and how the arrangement will be reviewed.
If there is a concern about the formal process, consult the assistance routes in the official guidance. Keep the request and the employer's response factual; this article does not decide whether a particular rejection is justified.
