MOM requires employers to issue itemised payslips to employees covered by the Employment Act. Its guidance says payslips should accompany payment, or be supplied within three working days if they cannot be given together. The required items depend on what applies to the payment; the official page provides the complete list.
For an employee, the payslip is a starting point for understanding the calculation. A bank deposit alone does not explain every component.
Check the period and identity first
Confirm the employer, employee details and salary period. Make sure you are reviewing the correct record, particularly if several payments or adjustments were made close together.
Keep payslips in a secure place and avoid sending an unredacted copy to unrelated people for a routine question. Salary records can contain information that does not belong in a public forum or general team chat.
Separate the components
Look for the items relevant to your pay arrangement: basic pay, applicable allowances or additional payments, deductions and the net amount. Review overtime or other items only where they apply. A component's absence may need clarification rather than an immediate assumption about what happened.
Compare the record with the employment terms and any authorised changes. Do not assume a variable payment is guaranteed merely because it appeared in an earlier month.
Ask a precise reconciliation question
For example: “Could you explain the [named component] for [salary period]? My understanding from [relevant document] is [specific point]. Please confirm the calculation and whether a correction is needed.”
If the bank payment differs from the net figure shown, identify both amounts and dates accurately. Keep the original records rather than changing one document to match another.
Handle corrections through the approved process
Ask which record will be corrected, how you will receive the revised information and whether another payment or adjustment is expected. Retain the explanation so the same discrepancy does not become an unresolved question again next month.
Employers can use the official list as part of a payroll-quality check, with access limited to authorised staff. A template alone does not establish that every calculation is correct.
If the issue concerns a late salary payment, review the relevant timing and assistance guidance as well. Identifying the exact component and period helps the responsible people understand what needs to be resolved.
