A sales interview may explore results, but it should also help the employer understand how you work with customers and colleagues. A confident pitch cannot replace evidence of listening, judgement and dependable follow-through.
Prepare against the role's product, customer group and responsibilities. Account management, new-business development and support for a sales team can require different examples.
1. How do you understand a customer's needs?
Describe the questions you asked, what you learned and how that affected the next step. Avoid presenting discovery as simply waiting for a chance to repeat a prepared pitch. Explain how you checked an assumption.
2. How did you handle an objection?
Choose an example where you clarified the concern and responded within your knowledge and authority. Do not imply that every hesitation must be overcome or that you promise features the business cannot deliver.
3. How do you maintain useful pipeline information?
Explain how you record the stage, next action, owner and relevant context. A system is useful when the information supports decisions, not merely when every field is filled. Keep customer details appropriately confidential in the interview.
4. How do you work with delivery or support teams?
Describe how you confirmed expectations, communicated a handover and handled a gap between a request and what could be delivered. Separate your contribution from the team's outcome.
5. How do you explain your results?
Use figures only when accurate, comparable and appropriate to share. Clarify the period, your responsibility and relevant context. If you cannot disclose confidential revenue information, describe the contribution in another specific way rather than inventing a percentage.
Practise beyond the headline achievement
Use STAR to prepare the reasoning behind an example. Expect questions about what you controlled, what changed and what you learned. An honest explanation of a difficult period can be more useful than an unsupported claim of consistent success.
Ask about the role's customer segment, support, targets and pay basis. Review variable compensation and important conditions through the offer checklist before accepting. An interview should help both sides understand how the work and expectations fit together.
